Quick question:

In FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX what type of accent is Elliot (Giovanni Ribisi) speaking in? Its quite subtle, and vague, which was well done - but I'm having a difficulty figuring out what it is. Any ideas?

x-posted a few places.

Err, good question.

A nasally "nerd" accent, I guess?

I remember angrykeebler said he had a Southern accent, but I don't know.

Many review sites I've seen said he had a German accent, which I do not see at all. They must have gotten the idea from the original FotP film, which incidentally, the director of the remake refused to see (in order to make his own film without influence from another source or something).

Very odd! I looked at a site which said he had a Belgian accent. WTF LOL

Elliott is indeterminate! NOOO

Well, the scene when he first initiates the idea of building the plane, he says the same of the company he works for, and then says, "They're in Long Beach". Being born/raised/residing in California, and having lived in Long Beach, it is definately not a California accent, as common sense would point out. However; when he says the word, "Long" he draws out the "ong" a bit, and there are several other words too. It was a good acting job either way, it does fit into the whole idea of nobody really knows where he is originally from. Still, I'd be interested in hearing what "touch" of an accent he was trying to convey as an actor.

Thanks for the response :)

Yeah - I live in California, and I agree with you about him not sounding like a Californian at all. (Funny thing though, one of my friends' co-workers was born and raised in Long Beach, and he has a Tennessee accent! Weird, huh!?)

I wish we could ask Giovanni Ribisi himself! Wouldn't it be funny if he didn't know either? Hahaha!

No kiddin'!

Yeah that'd make it quite a bit easier if we could just ask him. I think he'd me fantastic to sit down and "talk shop" with.

Southern?

Personally, I don't think he sounds southern in the slightest. There's too much of a quip to his voice, and as much travelling as I've done in the south, I'd be interested in hearing just what part of the south they may think that he was conveying. Its difficult to tell. The way the A's are said, aren't of a southern origin as far as I can tell. Hmmmmm...

NOw its bugging me because I want to know lol

Thank you! I keep telling him that I disagree, but he insists upon this! Hahaha!

Me too - it was bugging me before and I completely forgot about it; now I want to know all over again! I should watch the movie again to see if I can place it.

Right on gumshoe,

Breaking it down sherlock holmes style and finding out the answer to this.

My advice would be to go to the beginning, to the scene I mentioned. And the scene right before the electrical storm where they ground the plane. He's on a rant to Towns and asks "Are you even listening to me?" its definately not a southern accent.

Sounds like a good idea! I think that will be my chore of the day tomorrow evening! I shall stick to the speakers and absorb every word he says! Hahahaha! I'll get back to you on that!

I've lived in the South for the past 15 years of my 21 year old life and have never heard anyone speaking like that before. Whenever I call or visit my relatives back in California, they don't sound anything like that.

I think he was just mixing and matching... kinda like the guy in Snatch.

Thanks :)

I made the icon myself after originally wanting to have a BASIC theme on my LJ. I love Brian Van Holt as well as Giovanni Ribisi ;)

Reading My Mind

I was totally just thinking this as I was watching the movie!

I googled how to contact him, cuz I've searched for what his accent was and i cant find it anywhere, but I couldn't find how to contact him :( It's definitely not Southern....and IDK about German. It's not thick enough for him to have been from Germany himself...maybe a family member was and he was around it for a long time so he adopted it slightly. Don't underestimate Giovanni Ribisi--that's the kind of things us actors do when we're researching characters, so he might as well figured that was a clever way to do it.

Point is, idk. If anyone finds his email or snail mail address, let me know cuz I've got tons I want to ask him about this role :D
